Kaua'i Keepsakes

The second leg of my Hawaiian travels back in August was to the beautifully lush island of Kaua'i, also known as "The Garden Isle". It's amazing how all of the Hawaiian islands have very unique characteristics. Maui is known as the "Valley Isle" and has much dryer climates for the most part. Almost every vacation we take to Maui, we've seen at least one small brush fire in the hillsides. Unlike Maui, Kaua'i is flourishing with green and beautiful rain forests.

I swear there is some sort of magic on these islands. The rain seemed to fall only over night or in the rain forests themselves, and we had another week of sunshine.

Luau time! The Smith family hosts an incredible garden luau in the fern grotto of the sacred Wailua River Valley. Talk about dinner and a show! The meal included the traditional roast pig, teriyaki beef, mahi mahi, chicken adobo, poi, and of course, tropical mixed drinks and a good dessert table. Definitely the luau to go to if you visit Kaua'i!

We stayed at the Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club in Lihue. This resort was designed in the style of a royal Hawaiian estate - and trust me, you can tell. This photo is just a tiny fraction of the gigantic pool. Hot tubs sat under the incredible white pillars pictured above, the resort had a lush tropical garden to walk through, a number of AMAZING restaurants (including Duke's that has a waterfall running through it, which I'll get to later), and a pretty much private ocean lagoon where I went stand-up paddle boarding a number of times.

Hiking the insanely breathtaking Waimea Canyon.

Pier jumping at Hanalei Bay.

If you're a coffee addict like myself, you MUST stop at the Kaua'i Coffee Company. Their coffee is fantastic, and they have flavoured brews unique to the islands such as Chocolate Macadamia Nut blend or Coconut Caramel Crunch.

Nothing like the view of the Napali Coast. We did a tour by helicopter of the entire island and it was so incredible to see the different climates of the island, the abundance of waterfalls, sea caves, and beaches.

As previously mentioned, Duke's was one of our resort's restaurant options. Amazing food, always busy, and great live music. On our last day (and a few other occasions), I came here specifically for this: Hula Pie. Made with macadamia nut ice cream piled HIGH on a chocolate cookie crust, it's topped with hot fudge and even more macadamia nuts. We won't talk about my weight gain from this trip, but this was so well worth it.

So much aloha,
